| How Iridium System Works |
Iridium has some 66 low – earth satellites nearly 1000 km above the earth, with a further 12 spare satellites orbiting in a constellation that covers the surface of the Globe
The Iridium constellation, are cross-linked for intercommunication.
The phones work in the open, with direct ‘line of sight’ contact with the Iridium satellites.
Non-line-of-sight voice and data connectivity – onboard and inside vessels, aircraft buildings, and land based vehicles - can be accessed using an external antenna.

Voice mail
Voice mail allows callers to leave a recorded message in your personal mailbox.
Call forwarding
When your phone is not in use, calls can be forwarded to another phone requirements for Ship Security and Alert Systems (SSAS). These SSAS solutions offer a flexible array of choices to meet the IMO carriage requirements and flag administration specifications. Using Iridium, SSAS messages are routed directly to the designated authority specified by the flag state. |

| Data |
Using a PC and an Iridium phone to connect to the internet or a corporate network, you can browse the web, send and receive email, and transfer files. Two different types of data calls can be configured depending on your requirements:
Dial-Up Data
The Dial-Up Data Service provides dial-up connectivity through your Iridium phone to another computer, a corporate network/LAN or an Internet Service Provider (ISP). This service offers a data rate of up to 2.4 kbit/s.
Direct Internet Data
The Direct Internet Data Service provides direct connectivity from a PC, through your Iridium phone, via dedicated servers at the Iridium gateway. The data rate is up to 10 Kbps, depending on content. The service also allows you to manage airtime by seamlessly connecting and disconnecting through the Iridium system when no data is being transferred.
This ‘spoofing’ feature reduces your airtime charges, improves the phone’s battery life and reconnects you to the Iridium system if the connection is lost.
Paging
This service offers global messaging to an Iridium pager, allowing you to stay in permanent contact even inside most buildings. The pager can be used stand alone or as a ‘follow me’ pager that is configured to deliver messages when your handheld terminal cannot be reached.
Short Message Service (SMS)
In addition to voice services, an Iridium phone can be used for sending and receiving messages (up to 160 alphanumeric characters per message).
Ship Security and Alert Systems
Iridium offers a range of cost-effective solutions that allow ship owners to meet the new International Maritime Organisation (IMO) requirements for Ship Security and Alert Systems (SSAS). These SSAS solutions offer a flexible array of choices to meet the IMO carriage requirements and flag administration specifications. Using Iridium, SSAS messages are routed directly to the designated authority specified by the flag state. |
